This Week In Books 17th July 2016

A new blog topic for a Sunday Afternoon while a home cooked meal simmers in the background.

This is one (the topic not the meal) that I have thought about doing for a while now. It's by no means a groundbreaking original idea but none the less a topic I enjoy so there is no time like the present to turn it into a digital reality.

The plan is to provide a condensed version of the week's book & publishing news. This will be something that I hope grows & develops in the future - so for now you get to be my literary guinea pigs :)

Currently Reading : Human Acts by Han Kang.

Cardiff is looking to get it’s own Book Festival next October and had it launch this week. You can read more about it here

Vintage has acquired debut novel The Mermaid and Mrs Hancock by Imogen Hermes Gower after an auction which included 10 other publishers also in contention for the rights. The Mermaid and Mrs Hancock’s early draft was a finalist in the Mslexia first novel competition in 2015. Due in 2018 this is predicted to be a huge coo for Vintage.

Blackwell's are running a Pokemon Go photo competition to entice people into their bookstores and are even emailing customers to tell them where the Pokemon are.

Winnie the pooh has been voted favourite children’s book character from a vote commissioned The Reading Agency beating Harry Potter, Bilbo Baggins & Mathilda.

A town is Texas has fired it’s Library Cat named Browser. The town council took a vote on this and now looks to become a permanent move. Browser was hired to catch mice but became a lovable permanent fixture but has now by all accounts outstayed his welcome & now has 30 days to find a new place to live.

Divergent series author Veronica Roth’s upcoming release Carve the Mark due in 2017 will be available in 33 different languages.

Printed book sales are up 9.3% in the first 6 months of this year
